Born in 1943 in Ahmedabad, Amit Ambalal is one of India’s most distinguished contemporary artists, whose six-decade journey in art has left an indelible mark on the Indian art landscape. A graduate in Arts, Commerce, and Law, Mr. Ambalal trained under Shri Chaganlal Jadav before dedicating himself full-time to painting in 1979.
His artistic practice encompasses painting, sculpture, and ceramics, with works that explore themes ranging from mythology and folklore to contemporary social commentary. Mr. Ambalal’s art is characterized by its distinctive visual language that bridges traditional Indian aesthetics with modern sensibilities, often featuring vibrant narratives inspired by Krishna, nature, and everyday life.
Recognition and Collections
Mr. Ambalal’s work is housed in prestigious institutions including the National Gallery of Modern Art (Delhi), Lalit Kala Akademi, British Museum (London), and Victoria & Albert Museum (London). He has been honored with numerous awards, including the Gujarat State Lalit Kala Akademi Award (1968), Civitella Ranieri Foundation Fellowship in Italy (2003), and the Gujarat Lalit Kala Akademi’s Gaurav Puraskar (2008).
Scholarship and Leadership
Beyond his studio practice, Mr. Ambalal is a respected scholar, having authored seminal works on Nathadwara painting, including “Krishna as Shrinathji” (1987) and “Shringara of Shrinathji” (2022). His dedication to the arts extends to institutional leadership—he has served on the boards of Gujarat Lalit Kala Akademi, National Institute of Design, and National Gallery of Modern Art, among others.
With over 45 solo exhibitions across India and internationally, and participation in countless group shows, Amit Ambalal continues to inspire generations of artists.
